SMaRT leader named a top Australian innovator

UNSW SMaRT Centre DIrector Prof Veena Sahajwalla has been named a top Australian female innovator by the Australian Trade and Investment Commission (Austrade).

Veena's recognition of one of eight Australians reflects her leadership and work at the UNSW SMaRT Centre pioneering the science of microrecycling R&D creating various MICROfactorieTM technologies that recover valuable materials from waste and reform them into new products and feedstock for remanufacturing.

SMaRT's work and results are recognised the world over including through bodies like the World Economic Forum and has resulted in receiving many prestigious awards.

Publishing the list, Austrade said: "Australia’s science and technology sectors have long been shaped by the vision and determination of women, whose breakthroughs have addressed some of the world’s most pressing challenges. Their work is diverse – from renewable energy to the circular economy, sustainable mining, creative technology, medtech and aviation – demonstrating the transformative power of combining innovation with purpose."
